Stitch

New year, new term and the start of a new block. I'm my third day into stitch and I am enjoying myself playing around with techniques, materials, mistakes and the sewing machine. I'm reasonably new to the sewing machine and so have been anxious about the stitch block since I first saw it on my timetable. However, it is much more than simply mastering the sewing machine, in fact  50% students don't even use a sewing machine at all, I think I could fit in that percentage! Stitch is already teaching me the different and endless ways in which you can read drawings. It has also emphasised the importance of having good, readable, inventive, colourful and informative drawings as starting points. Without it it really limits your imagination, and your inspiration.

Today I've been focusing of the beaks in one of my bird drawings. I've come out with six experiments which I think could have great potential. I've looked at different elements of the drawing including contrasts of space, colours, shapes, line quality and size and played about with different ways to move these elements on step further. What I am finding challenging about stitch is the endless avenues there is to explore. For me it is quite a daunting prospect when starting off, and feel like im entering into a stitch abyss! However, as long i remember to keep testing, be daring, and just keep playing I think I could really enjoy this block and create some exciting samples. And you never know, i might learn how to stitch in a straight line.
